The world-famous Babraham Research Campus was seeking to expand its campus in Cambridgeshire despite its Green Belt location. First challenge? Planning permission.

      Babraham B960 - 2023.05.24 (6)

We set about providing a compelling argument for the range of very special circumstances required to outweigh any harm to the green belt.

Apart from significant economic benefits, the development will secure several environmental, social, and health benefits. There will be a Net Gain in Biodiversity of over 20%. The buildings will achieve up to a 40% reduction in Carbon Dioxide emissions. We built a strong case.

Planning permission was successfully secured much faster than anticipated. Our Planning, Project Management and Building Surveying teams had collaborated to bring the proposals from design inception to securing planning permission in just eight months.

We’re now taking on the challenge of developing two feasibility studies for three new two-storey research and development buildings, to support further development and comply with the campus’s Net Zero growth strategy.

Our project management team are delivering the next phase of the Park’s expansion and have been engaged to advise on the new phase according to its own sustainability agenda.

The new cluster of buildings will offer a range of suite sizes and appeal to small start-ups and scale-ups. The new development will house up to six different tenants, creating a ‘home for life’ for R&D businesses and a significant expansion of the park.

The next phase of the park’s development also includes:

      • Methodologies to enable Net Zero Carbon in operation by 2040. This will help the campus meet its sustainability goals and reduce its environmental impact.

      • Securing financial return from lease end events like Dilapidations. Our expertise will maximise value and optimize campus operations.

      • Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and Capital Works driving the importance of effective estate management. Proactive planning will ensure campus infrastructure stays resilient.

Our multi- disciplinary approach has helped Babraham Campus to achieve their growth strategy and provide sought after space to innovative science and technology companies.
