An award-winning commercial building surveyor, member of the Editorial Advisory Group for the RICS Built Environmental journal and a qualified principal designer specialising in large, complex projects.

From incubator lab spaces to aircraft hangars, Jonathan’s clients will tell you he has a fastidious approach to all his projects with a drive to offer strategic and pragmatic advice that allows them to achieve their goals.
With a multitude of office and pharma lab projects for Cambridge Science Park and a key part of our team undertaking projects at Granta Park, Jonathan has a desirable understanding of how science and technology operations steer prime real estate.
Some of his most challenging projects have included taking a development management role in a ‘cut and carve’ of existing buildings into flexible incubator spaces; installing 2km of infrastructure and ductwork at Europe’s first science park; project managing the upgrade of an aircraft hangar on a top security, live airside site; and delving into complex lease terms to successfully release Sony Entertainment from their lease without penalty, resulting in a dilapidations settlement. All testament to Jonathan’s award-winning success.
His clear-thinking strategy and sound advice have enabled his clients to build, repurpose and reconfigure office, laboratory and industrial spaces that complement market demand and attract lucrative tenants.

Jonathan Wright at Bidwells was our Project Manager for the lab conversion of an office suite to a lab/office demise at the Cori building – Granta Park. Jonathan helped manage the design team and help us see the project from inception through to completion. His diligent and hands-on approach was key in seeing through what was a complex and demanding project. Working through MEP challenges and necessary upgrades to overseeing commissioning and tenant handover were critical components for the success of the scheme. Jonathan’s professional approach throughout helped us deliver a great scheme on time and on budget.

Repurposing Spaces to Labs: Out-of-Town or City Centre?
Our research shows location is a key consideration for laboratory-based businesses. We compare an out-of-town industrial conversion for Sherlock Biosciences with a retail-to-labs project in Cambridge’s Grafton Centre, examining the considerations of each.

Investing in Life Sciences Real Estate: Design
Designing and fitting out a property for laboratory use is incredibly complex and specific to the company operating in that space. A ‘one size fits all’ approach does not work.

Investing in Life Sciences Real Estate: Repurposing
Converting office, industrial or retail space to labs used to be unviable. But with interest booming and life sciences businesses now occupying a third of the total commercial floorspace in the Oxford-Cambridge Arc, repurposing presents opportunities for investors willing to transform older assets into dynamic new spaces.
