As a Senior Forestry Consultant in the Fort William office, Ian manages all aspects of forestry including Rhododendron eradication, habitat management, woodland creation and timber recovery for a range of clients including large highland estates and forestry investors.

Ian also provides professional and management advice to a wide range of smaller estates and clients, as well as public bodies.

Before joining Bidwells in 2017, Ian spent 11 years in the forestry sector in both Canada and Scotland. After graduating from the University of Northern British Columbia in 2006 with a BSc in Forest Management, he worked throughout northern British Columbia and the Yukon before moving to Scotland (2009) where he worked for the Forestry Commission as a Harvesting Manager.

While working in Canada for a private consultant Ian managed a large silviculture programme across northern British Columbia; surveying and writing site prescriptions. Ian also worked with the Fort St. James Community Forest writing land management plans for timber removal across its ~4000 hectares. Other projects Ian worked on during his time in Canada were fire mitigation, ecological site classification and forest health assessments.

During his time with the Forestry Commission Ian was employed as a Harvesting Manager in the Lochaber Forest District delivering a significant harvesting programme that included complex thinning and skyline sites, using both in-house resources and as standing sales. Ian was involved in the strategic planning of programmes that included road design, harvesting methods, public access and constraints such as public roads and utilities.

While with the Forestry Commission Ian was involved in the development of a number of projects including niche market wood supply and a silviculture programme to improve thinning within broadleaved stands as well as commercial conifer stands.
