Bidwells has secured planning permission for the repowering of Windy Standard 1, one of Scotland’s earliest wind farms and now among the first to benefit from repowering consent.

This landmark decision represents a major step forward for the sector and continues Bidwells’ near three-decade involvement with the site, having first supported the landowner when Windy Standard was built in 1996.

Since then, Bidwells has advised on successive projects at the Carsphairn Forestry Complex, with the Windy Standard 1 repowering marking the fourth scheme delivered in partnership with the client and developer Fred Olsen Renewables. The repowering of Windy Standard 1 represents the latest step in this enduring partnership, ensuring the site remains at the forefront of renewable energy generation.

The project will see the decommissioning of 36 existing turbines in 2027, to be replaced by eight next generation 6.2MW turbines standing up to 200 metres tall. This repowering will more than double the site’s generating capacity to 49.6MW and extend its operational life by 35 years. It reflects not only advances in turbine technology but also the evolving ability to balance renewable energy generation with other land uses, including commercial forestry.

Elspeth Jackson, Senior Energy & Renewables Consultant at Bidwells, said:
“Securing consent for the repowering of Windy Standard 1 is a fantastic milestone for everyone involved. Not only does it reflect the strength of long-term collaboration on this site, but it also unlocks a new generation of clean energy in Dumfries and Galloway. This project will deliver lasting benefits for the local community, the regional economy and Scotland’s wider journey to net zero.”

This milestone reflects the value of long-term support in navigating the complexities of grid reform, planning and land management, helping to unlock the full potential of renewable energy assets.

Shepherd & Wedderburn and Harper MacLeod provided legal expertise throughout the project.
