Bidwells has been appointed to provide strategic planning advice on the emerging Oxford Station Masterplan on behalf of Network Rail. The transformative project will reimagine one of the city’s most important transport gateways.

The proposals seek to deliver an enhanced station experience, including a new eastern entrance, improved passenger facilities, better integration with bus, cycle and pedestrian networks, and opportunities for complementary commercial, hotel and public realm development. The wider masterplan could unlock major regeneration benefits around the station, creating a more connected, accessible and sustainable transport hub whilst supporting Oxford’s continued economic growth.

As planning consultant to the project team, Bidwells is shaping the planning strategy for the masterplan and guiding proposals through one of the UK’s most complex and sensitive planning environments. The emerging vision combines essential rail infrastructure improvements with high-quality placemaking, an enhanced public transport interchange, new active travel connections and substantial development opportunities around the station. By balancing growth, connectivity and heritage, the masterplan represents a major opportunity to reinforce Oxford Station’s role as a gateway to the city and to the wider Oxford–Cambridge innovation corridor.

Inspired by Oxford architecture, the proposed design respects the scale and street pattern of the neighbouring buildings and preserves the views across the city’s skyline.

Bidwells joins a project team that includes Hawkins\Brown and Platform.

Lyana Powlesland, Associate, Planning, comments: “Oxford Station is one of the City’s most strategically important regeneration opportunities. The emerging masterplan has the potential to deliver not only a significantly improved passenger experience, but also a new urban quarter that strengthens connections between the station, the city centre, and key growth areas. We are delighted to be supporting the project team in developing a planning strategy that can help realise this ambitious vision.”
