Biodiversity Net Gain Update - May 2025

Over the past 6 months we have seen an increase in developments getting through the planning process and receiving Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) as a condition to planning.

This is likely a result of developers and ecologists having a better understanding of how to adapt designs to maximise BNG on-site, as well as Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) having improved processes to review schemes. This has led to an increase in developers seeking biodiversity units for immediate allocation.

On the other end of the spectrum, we are seeing an increasing number of promoters and developers considering BNG at the outline planning stage. This enables them to understand the degree of off-site BNG that will be required and secure option agreements for the biodiversity units. Furthermore, presenting the off-site BNG solution to the LPA early in the planning process provides assurance that the offset is accepted.

Let us know your off-site BNG requirements and we will identify the optimum solution by reviewing our portfolio of over 40 habitat banks across England. The following features of our portfolio enable us to provide cost-effective solutions:

We hold exclusive brokering mandates on several registered sites and have a substantial pipeline of sites in development to continue expanding our coverage.

Our extensive experience in the site registration and allocation process gives purchasers confidence that we provide credible solutions and can guide them through the process.

Last year we allocated over 150 biodiversity units (including pre-legislation allocations) and are currently documenting transactions for over 160 units to be allocated this year, with multiples of this in earlier stages of negotiation.
