In 2025, Bidwells’ Environment, Society, Economy (ESE) specialists supported clients across the UK with evidence-led insight on how development affects people, places and the planet.

We asked colleagues from across the team to reflect on the moments that defined the year, and what they’re looking forward to in 2026.

Looking ahead to 2026

What do you see as the biggest opportunity for ESE in the year ahead, and where should clients expect to see the greatest impact from your work in 2026?
2026 promises to be an exciting year for ESE. We are aiming to help shape the debate about how best to capture and measure social impact. As well as launching a new social value offer for clients, we will be at UKREiiF in May 2026 hosting a session on social value and well-being. We will also be providing thought leadership in the environmental impact space as we renew our coveted charter mark with the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals.
Mark Teasdale - Head of Environment Society Economy

What defined 2025 for the team?

Looking back over the past year, what best captures the journey ESE has been on, and how has the team evolved since its formation?
The whole is greater than the sum of the parts." This phrase, attributed to Aristotle nearly 2,400 years ago, perfectly encapsulates the essence of what ESE has achieved for me since its formation in January 2025. Creating one unified team, ESE have not only turbocharged financial performance and strengthened our collective success but also proven that integration is not just about efficiency — it is about unlocking a greater vision, one that balances commercial achievement with meaningful contributions to society and the environment for our clients projects.
James Alflatt - Partner, Planning

Standout moments from 2025

Among the many projects delivered in 2025, which moments stand out most, and why have they stayed with you?
2025 has been an exceptional year for ESE, we’ve been busy on a diverse portfolio of projects, we’ve been profitable and we’ve had fun. My highlights have been developing our population projection model and preparing the Economic and Social Value Assessment for RE N-GAGE, a charity supporting at risk teens in South West London.
Simon Elliott - Associate, Economics and Social Value
My standout moment was delivering the Enfield Equality Impact Assessment, particularly interviewing residents facing compulsory purchase. Hearing their stories firsthand was humbling and reinforced why our work matters - ensuring vulnerable communities have a voice in development. It’s moments like these that remind me of the real human impact behind the assessments we produce.
Caroline Rodger - Principal EIA Consultant
Despite tight deadlines, long hours, and major challenges, we delivered! I am proud to have been part of the team behind the planning application submission for the new James Paget Hospital. This achievement proves what’s possible when a passionate, dedicated team works together, paving the way for a new hospital that will transform healthcare and improve outcomes for our community.
Karen Long - Secretary/Office Manager, Planning

What motivates you in your work?

What keeps you motivated day to day, and how does your work at ESE connect to the wider purpose of shaping places that work for people and the environment?
The protection of nature is the reason I get up in the morning. Environmental Impact Assessment is such an important tool for protecting our environment, and I get to do my favourite thing with wonderful, talented and incredibly smart people here in the ESE team at Bidwells.
Alicia Walter - Senior EIA Consultant
This year brought together what drew me to ESE: using economic thinking to shape places that support communities and the environment. Framing the benefits of schemes and speaking with residents reminded me how real experiences sit behind every dataset. Working alongside such a thoughtful, collaborative team has made turning evidence into meaningful value for clients and communities even more rewarding.
Sophie Neupauer - Principal Economist

What’s it like working in ESE?

How would you describe the day-to-day experience of working in ESE, and what makes the breadth of work and team culture distinctive?
With ESE, no day is the same. One day might be spent absorbed in spreadsheets and government databases at our desks, another might find us trekking through a rural landscape besieged by insects. It is that very breadth and diversity of opportunity that makes life with the team so interesting!
Divya Anjali - Analyst, Economics and Social Value
What keeps me excited at ESE is the wide mix of project we get to explore. It is genuinely rewarding to bring out environmental and social benefits in everything we do. But honestly, my favourite part is the atmosphere. Being surrounded by encouraging colleagues makes everything feel both fun and meaningful.
Kariza Salim - Graduate Analyst, Environment Society Economy

How has ESE grown over the past year?

Over the past year, how has ESE evolved as an integrated team and what difference has that made to the way you support clients?
Bringing the EIA and Economy & Social Value offerings into one P&L has strengthened our impact services and expanded our external presence. Colleagues have truly embraced the merger and contributed to ESE’s success. It’s been a privilege working with such a talented team, driving meaningful environmental and social outcomes that truly advances our collective impact for our clients.
Charles Crowther - Associate, EIA
