Scores of people from Cambridge’s business community gathered at King’s College to find out who were the victors of a host of categories in the region’s premier business awards which are organised by Cambridge News and Media.

Richard Duxbury Managing Director of Cambridge News and Media told the packed audience that this year they had received the highest number of entries since the awards were launched in 1994.

The audience at the Great Hall was told that Bidwells had been crowned Employer of the Year after hearing about the firm’s numerous initiatives to create a rewarding and engaging workplace for the 300-strong Cambridge workforce.

Bidwells was commended for creating a rewarding and engaging place to work where the business lives its values: integrity, teamwork, excellence, energy and fun! Our entry also highlighted our commitment to helping others through our charity work; our graduate and training programmes; and our plans to reinvigorate Bidwell House using the latest research, to create the best working environment for employees.

Bidwells HR Director Julie Archer was joined by Senior Partner Patrick McMahon, Head of Cambridge Richard Pilsworth and Amanda Nilsson from the Rural division to collect the award.

      Julie said:

We are absolutely thrilled that the we have won this award it is a great honour. We entered the competition because ultimately we feel that our people should be recognised for their amazing hard work, professionalism and their boundless enthusiasm to help others especially through our CSR.

Over the last three years alone, our people have carried out 2,000 volunteering days helping a host of charities and projects across the city. When we set them the ambitious fundraising challenge during our 175th anniversary year they smashed the target, and we are so proud that the grand total was more than £175,000 - and all still, while they carried out their day jobs. It is the people who make Bidwells such a great place, and it is solely down to them that the firm has won this prestigious award.

      Richard Duxbury, added:

These awards are held to celebrate these fantastic businesses and business people who make our region the place it is.

No-one will have quite predicted the events of the last 12 months, but what stands out now is the incredible resilience and can-do attitude of our local business community.

This year’s winners represent the powerhouse that is business in Cambridge. It has been our privilege to have reported on their progress over the past year and to now see them chosen by the panel of distinguished judges to fight it out on Thursday night.

This year saw more entries than any time since our launch in 1994. The record number reflects the increasing popularity and continued credibility of these awards and the ongoing success of our local businesses and business people.
