Rural economy
delivery mechanisms unclear

It is good to see specific and continued support for the rural economy albeit that mechanisms for delivery are unclear.

The Rural Economy section of the NPPF sits within the chapter dealing with the economy.

The NPPF sets out four key elements for the Rural Economy which local authorities should embrace in local plan making and decision making:

  1. Sustainable growth and expansion of existing businesses
  2. Development and diversification of agricultural and other land based rural businesses
  3. Development of sustainable rural tourism and leisure developments
  4. Retention and development of local services and community facilities

There are no new initiatives at this stage which will actively assist local authorities in supporting development in the rural area and therefore it will be interesting to see the reaction of those based in rural areas who have to often battle through the planning process. That battle appears set to continue.
