Partner, Forestry

Andy is a MICF qualified forester with an in-depth knowledge of forestry having worked on a broad range of projects across Scotland and northern England.

A member of the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF), Andy graduated in 2009 from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in Ecology with Forestry Honours, receiving the ICF Best Student Award. He has worked as an international commodities trader and corporate social responsibilities manager on environmental and sustainability matters in the UK and South America, as well as his current role as a Partner within the Bidwells forestry team.

He is jointly responsible for the strategic management of over 40,000 ha of forestry. Andy is involved in the planning and management of harvesting contracts, setting annual work programmes, forest restructuring and woodland creation for private and institutional clients.

His work involves the delivery of forestry advice and services to a range of windfarm developers including; assessing forestry crops for compensation value negotiations, tree surveys and production of large scale woodland habitat management plans and working with developers to discharge forestry related planning conditions.

Andy provides advice on Scottish forestry policy and regulation, its interpretation and implementation in relation to the forest industry and associated activities. He contributes to the preparation and reporting of forest property valuations, and the production of marketing and sales materials for both small and large scale woodlands.

Recent projects include:

  • Banks Group, Kype Muir Windfarm - acting as Banks Group’s forestry advisor in relation to the construction of a 26 turbine windfarm situated entirely within a commercial forest complex. Undertaking crop valuations to inform landowner compensation deals, producing a forest management plan, forestry waste management plan, providing data to inform the traffic management plan, input on the forestry elements of the onsite habitat management plan, producing and distributing a tender package to market the sale of 410 hectares of forest timber crop, assisting in putting in place a harvesting contract and overseeing the forestry clearance works and sale of timber on behalf of the developer.
  • Murthly & Strathbraan Estate, Woodland Creation - acting on behalf of a mixed estate in Highland Perthshire to produce indicative planting designs and planting income and expenditure forecasts for a 250 hectare grant funded woodland creation project, to transform unproductive upland agricultural ground into a multi-functional modern forest. Undertaking site surveys and desk based reporting in conjunction with the landowner and the Estate’s Game Department to produce a package of information to provide to Forestry Commission Scotland, to inform their environmental impact assessment determination for the project.
  • Purgatory Forest Complex, Kilgallioch Windfarm - acting on behalf of three separate forest owners to evaluate and negotiate timber crop payments resulting from large scale clearance of forest crops to facilitate the construction of Scottish Power Renewables 96 turbine Kilgallioch Windfarm, monitoring the subsequent harvesting operations to ensure compliance with the Lease and respective land agreements including; the review of rock mineral excavations and the operational impact on site conditions.
