Principal Planner

Alasdair is a chartered planner with professional experience across a diverse range of projects within the renewable energy, property and infrastructure sectors. 

Alasdair joined Bidwells in early 2018 as principal planner in Scotland. He is a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, with professional experience across a variety of sectors, including residential and commercial property, renewable energy, and infrastructure.

Alasdair has delivered detailed planning strategy, advice and technical input across a range of national, major and local developments, including nationally significant energy schemes and EIA projects.

He has knowledge of the planning appeal process, with a strong track record representing several clients and types of development and has provided technical planning input to a judicial review procedure.

In 2015 Alasdair was seconded to an international renewable energy developer, to provide planning and environmental advice across a development portfolio. Alasdair was responsible for the overall planning strategy and approach, whilst identifying and managing planning constraints. His approach ultimately played a key role in gaining consent for the projects.

Alasdair maintains an active role within the Royal Town Planning Institute and will Chair the Scottish Young Planners Network (2018/19).

Recent projects include:

  • SSE Renewables - managed the successful planning appeal process for two offshore demonstrator turbines at Hunterston in North Ayrshire.
  • Fair Isle Microgrid - provided planning guidance for a community-led microgrid project consented in February 2018.
  • Element Power (secondment) - delivered and managed planning input for a 19km grid connection in Perth & Kinross, including pre-application advice, EIA screening, community consultation, and preparation of the formal planning submission.
  • Green Breeze Energy Ltd - appointed Planning Monitoring Officer on behalf of the client and West Lothian Council, to provide detailed reporting and compliance updates during the construction phase of Drumduff wind farm, West Lothian.
  • National Solar Developer - managed a planning review of operational solar developments across the UK, identifying areas of non-compliance and contributing to the overall strategy for resolving outstanding matters.
  • Battery Storage (various) - planning agent for a portfolio of battery storage and gas-fired peaking plants throughout the UK, delivering a high consent rate.
  • Residential Feasibility & Site Search - alongside GIS colleagues, contributed to development of a site-finding tool to inform residential developers, leading to planning feasibility studies being prepared for selected sites.
  • Provision of overarching planning strategies and detailed development advice
  • Detailed review and analysis of planning policy frameworks and legislation
  • Delivery of robust planning policy chapters and planning statements 
  • Management of complex planning and EIA applications
  • Promoting development assets whilst engaging with stakeholders and communities
