UEA
SKY HOUSE

Prepared and submitted a planning application for a 15,000sqm new academic  building to form a new gateway to the UEA Campus, one of the largest building projects the University has embarked upon since its formation in the early 1960s.

 What we did

  • Coordinated, advised and worked closely with the client, design and technical teams to ensure a robust planning application and supporting material

  • Worked closely with the client team, architects and design/technical team to develop a scheme which met the needs of the University whilst also contributing to the architectural character of the surrounding area

  • Completed 18 months of liaison and negotiation with the Local Planning Authority and Historic England, involving extensive pre-application discussions to negotiate the proposals, particularly around the sensitivity of developing immediately adjacent to a number of heritage assets, including the Denys Lasdun Grade II Academic Teaching Wall.

  • Undertook a comprehensive and detailed pre-application process, including a public exhibition to ensure that all stakeholders both inside and outside the University community had their say on the scheme, before it was finalised and submitted to the Council for determination

  • The EIA team were able to convince the Council through a comprehensive screening exercise, that the proposed development did not require EIA

Result

  • The Sky House secured full planning permission, and will form a new welcoming gateway to the UEA delivering a new centre for the arts, humanities and social sciences, whilst being key to the successful delivery of the University’s Estates and Development Strategies.

  • The Bidwells Planning Team have recently refreshed the University’s Development Framework Strategy forecasting the University’s growth to 2038. This has been used as an evidence base to inform the emerging Greater Norwich Local Plan to secure allocation of additional land to enable the University’s continued campus expansion

  • This project forms one of many we continue to assist the University with, as their sole provider of Planning & Property Services under their recently renewed consultant framework
