Shendish Manor

Bidwells were instructed to create a heritage statement to accompany an application for a new hotel extension and spa facility for the Shendish Manor Hotel in Hertfordshire – a Grade II listed building set in an historic parkland.

What we did

  • Carried out in-depth research of the Shendish Manor site. We also engaged leading Landscape Historian, Professor Tom Williamson to research the history of the Manor House’s parkland

  • We undertook an assessment of the significance of the Manor House, nearby Apsley Manor Farmhouse (Grade II Listed) and all of the structures within the two listed building’s curtilage, which were built before 1st July 1948

  • Using this greater understanding of the site’s significance we carried out an assessment of the impact which the proposed extension would have upon the identified heritage assets

  • We also provided a Park Restoration Plan to accompany the delivery of improvements to the historic landscape

  • The proposals were approved

  • The Park Restoration Plan in particular, proved critical in the consideration of the final decision to approve the application
