New Craft Gin

the oxford artisan distillery

Bidwells was instructed to secure planning permission for the change of use of a former council depot site to an artisan gin distillery, adaption of existing listed buildings and erection of a new storage barn and visitors centre, incorporating a tasting room and restaurant.

What we did

  • Provided advice to the client and architect on establishing the principle of use of the site as a distillery before submission of the more controversial proposal for a visitor’s centre

  • Successfully argued that the allocation of the site in the development plan as a housing site would compromise the character and setting of a listed barn and that the creation of an artisan distillery would retain the barn’s open nature and its setting

  • Assisted in presenting the proposals to a CABE Design Review Board

  • Spoke in favour of the application at two council committees

  • Secured all necessary planning permissions

  • Utilised contacts with council officers

  • Provided advice on council procedures

  • Managed multiple stakeholders and views to achieve the desired outcome for our client
