Imperial War Museum
Instructed to complete a Significance Assessment and Conservation Management Plan for site within a Conservation Area, containing numerous listed military aviation structures.
The project was to inform a Masterplan in relation to heritage assets, and feasibility of development corresponding to the promotion of the Imperial War Museum (IWM) Duxford, as an international-standard museum and visitor attraction.
What we did
The IWM instructed the Heritage team to undertake a full Significance Assessment of all assets.
This required in-depth research including; residual historic surfaces, the production of a Conservation Management Plan which informed a Masterplan for the entire site, comprising domestic buildings to the north part of the site, and predominantly technical buildings to the south.
Consolidation of the existing collective knowledge relating to the history of the site, as well as independent research, revealed that there is potential for the re-use or light-touch re-development of parts of the aerodrome to improve visitor experience, or increase rental income for the IWM in relation to heritage significance.
Our comprehensive Conservation Management Plan provided the IWM with a complete and up-to-date document determining the policies required in the pursuit of the retention, or preservation of the Significance of those assets, and how best to manage that in relation to future adaptation, alteration and repair.
The project is ongoing.
