Gonville & Caius College
The building’s fabric had a number of problems, ranging from leaking roofs through to extensive use of cementitious repairs to the delicate Ancaster limestone which had caused extensive erosion.
What we did
Provided detailed inspection surveys and recording of the fabric.
Obtained samples and specified matching materials.
Worked out and agreed the phasing of a seven year period to cause the least disruption to the College.
A number of gargoyles were found to be in a hazardous condition and eight new gargoyles were carved as replacements.
Undertaking the work in a phased and measured way allowed the client to budget and plan for the work over a seven-year period.
The completed work will have a lifespan of in excess of 50 years.
Our in-depth knowledge of conservation and restoration techniques and materials provided added value to the project.
Stonework in excess of
tonnes per chimney
