Former Priory School

Prepared a Heritage Statement in support of the delivery of 44 retirement living apartments on behalf of McCarthy & Stone. The development included the demolition of a locally-listed former school building

What we did

  • Undertook research to thoroughly understand the origins of the building, its occupants and changes undertaken over the decades

  • Prepared a Heritage Statement to accompany pre-application and application submissions

  • Provided design and townscape advice to ensure that the replacement building was of a suitable standard to replace the building proposed for demolition

  • Provided rebuttals to Reigate & Banstead District Council Conservation Officer’s comments

  • Provided written evidence and attended Informal Hearing on behalf of the client, Appeal allowed (March 2020)

  • The development was dependent on the removal of the existing building and would not have been viable if the demolition had not been achieved. We were able to present evidence to the Inspector that the existing building was of low heritage significance and that the proposed scheme provided a suitable replacement that conformed with local design guidance
