The industry has in the past been dominated by developers of commercial scale wind developers. However, the introduction of Government incentives in the form of Feed in Tariffs (FiT) and the direct effects of rising electricity costs have led many landowners to look at the various renewable energy alternatives for electricity generation. With a strong wind resource in the UK, small and medium scale wind has emerged as one of the biggest winners under FITs.
The small and medium wind industry has seen dramatic expansion in recent years - between 2005 and 2010, a total of 6,000 wind turbines in the 1.5kW to 100kW range were installed in the UK. By 2020, it is estimated that this could increase to over 600,000 turbines.
