  • Creating a strategy for the use of Azolla to lift women rural farmers out of poverty in Tamilnadu, India

Inspired by an essay for my MBA I searched for an international opportunity to develop my strategic planning skills.

Following discussions about the work that was being done to utilise the aquatic fern Azolla, I created a strategy for a business opportunity that had been set up with women farmers in the Tamilnadu region of India by the Socio-Economic and Educational Development Society (SEEDS) organisation based there.

The strategy set out opportunities for building the existing programme to enable more women to participate and explore opportunities to grow markets and develop the business, with possibilities for tapping into international markets.

The work is now being used by a group of students who have received funding and are building local business cases to deliver elements of the strategy and it is planned that my work will be published to enable wider use of the strategy.

This project is my dissertation for the One Planet MBA and is focussing on inherited waste - that is, waste which enters an organisation but the source is not within their influence. In assessing the issue I am considering how concepts such as the Circular Economy can be applied and how Biomimicry can be utilised to inspire potential new models
