The UK has used hydropower for well over a century and recent surveys have shown that there is further potential for capacity. There remains significant potential particularly for new small and micro scale hydropower projects. The Department for Energy and Climate Change Feed in Tariff scheme is likely to assist in these identified areas and increase the level of renewable energy supplied through hydropower from its current level of approximately 40%.
Hydro schemes provide reasonably predictable generation with less intermittency than other renewable technologies and can typically have high capacity factors. Coupled with its good correlation with demand, as energy output is often at its highest during the winter months, hydro is an attractive technology to UK Landowners.
