In the UK, an overwhelming majority of the emphasis on renewable energy has historically been focused on electricity production rather than heating. However, European and National targets now commit the UK to sourcing 12% (presently 1%) of our heat from renewable sources by 2020. There are many mechanisms being introduced to achieve this, one of the most significant of which is the Government's proposals to introduce financial incentives in the form of a "Renewable Heat Incentive" (RHI) scheme.
Wood is a source of renewable, sustainable and carbon-neutral energy and is both a readily accepted and growing part of energy policy throughout much of mainland Europe. Biomass heating system technology is both proven and clean, and typically operates at efficiencies in excess of 80% (heat only systems). It can be as easy and comfortable to use as oil, but cheaper.
Potential therefore exists in the substitution of wood-fuel for oil and gas in existing heating systems, particularly in large buildings such as schools, swimming pools, hospitals, government buildings and large private residences. There is also potential in new build developments to use wood as the primary source of heat from inception. |
